When the Youngstown Diocese needed to upgrade its flagship Cathedral, it looked to SoundCom Systems. Located in the heart of Youngstown, St. Columba Cathedral is home to thousands of Catholics across Northeast Ohio. The challenge for SoundCom was to build an intelligible sound system in a building made of solid marble, granite, and glass.
SoundCom designed the project around the latest in intelligent speaker technology involving tall, slender, steerable line array speakers. These new speakers allow SoundCom to put sound where it is needed and to minimize sound reflections off the walls, ceilings, and floors.
The speakers, made by Intellivox and standing over 17 feet tall, were custom painted to match the existing lavender columns of the Cathedral making the speakers practically disappear in the background. Understanding the aesthetic look is almost as important as the quality of sound, SoundCom was able to maximize the impact of the system, while minimizing it’s affect on the beauty of the Cathedral.
The system had to be easy to use, so SoundCom designed the system to operate without the need for an operator. By utilizing the latest in digital signal processing and automatic microphone mixing, SoundCom was able to make the system function with the press of a single button.
